Experiential Education

Experiential education is a model where one learns by doing, by actively engaging in experiences and then reflecting on learning moments that occur during that process.

According to the Association for Experiential Education:

  • Experiential learning occurs when carefully chosen experiences are supported by reflection and critical analysis.

  • Experiences are structured to require the learner to take initiative, make decisions and be accountable for results.

  • Throughout the experiential learning process, the learner is actively engaged in posing questions, investigating, experimenting, being curious, solving problems, assuming responsibility, being creative, and constructing meaning.

  • The design of the learning experience includes the possibility to learn from natural consequences, mistakes and successes.

"I was amazed to see how quickly the kids learned to apply cooperation techniques."

"I loved the way the kids were able to interact as groups without being graded based on academics or tests. They were able to come away feeling positive about themselves, not because they won something but because they tried something."
